Windshield Replacement & ADAS Calibration in 2026
Windshield replacement on an ADAS-equipped vehicle is a controlled sequence: identify the systems, select compliant materials, install to current instructions, satisfy calibration prerequisites, document the outcome and release only when applicable conditions are met.
This is an owner-level workflow, not a do-it-yourself installation guide. Technicians must use the current, vehicle-specific OEM procedure and the current adhesive-system instructions. Generic advice cannot resolve differences among models, build dates, camera versions, glass options or calibration tools.
Control the job before ordering glass
Identify systems and procedures at intake
Decode the VIN, inspect the existing windshield and verify equipment rather than trusting a year/make/model description. Record cameras, radar or lidar near the glass, HUD, rain/light sensors, heating, acoustic construction, antenna and brackets. Determine whether replacement triggers static, dynamic, dual calibration, initialization or scanning under the OEM procedure.
The ANSI/AGSC/AGRSS 005-2022 standard calls for assessment before replacement. If ADAS may require calibration and the shop will not follow its calibration provisions, it says not to undertake or complete installation and to notify the customer verbally and in writing.
Before the appointment, build a work-plan packet with VIN/option evidence, current OEM procedures, selected glass identification, adhesive instructions, required scan/calibration equipment and prerequisites, and clear in-house or sublet responsibility.
Make glass selection vehicle-specific
Do not turn “OEM versus aftermarket” into a blanket rule. Confirm the vehicle maker’s requirements and whether the part meets safety, optical, bracket and system needs. AGRSS requires glass meeting ANSI Z26.1 as required by FMVSS 205, but that alone does not prove compatibility with every camera or HUD.
Repairer Driven News reported on May 20, 2026 that Volvo’s position statement requires Volvo Genuine Windshields and adhesives, plus camera/radar calibration after replacement. Volvo identifies optical/geometric tolerances, thickness and HUD construction as concerns. That requirement cannot be generalized to every brand.
Install to one complete adhesive system
Treat minimum drive-away time as a condition, not a slogan
AGRSS requires current retention-system instructions, storage control and MDAT notice before and after installation. Adhesive lot numbers and glass DOT/part numbers must be traceable to the job.
Exact product instructions illustrate why staff should not rely on “our urethane is fast”:
- The May 2024 U.S. SikaTack ULTIMATE data sheet lists a 30-minute MDAT across its table’s stated range: temperatures above 0°F through 120°F and relative humidity above 0% through above 90%. It also says the product is for experienced professional users and provides product-specific surface-preparation limits.
- Sika’s current SikaTack MACH 60 page and data list a one-hour MDAT across the stated 0°F-to-120°F and above-0%-to-above-90%-relative-humidity table. The page also requires its named companion pretreatment products and installation within open time.
Those times belong only to those exact products under their stated conditions and instructions. Storage, expiration, contamination, substrate treatment and current technical updates still matter. Record ambient conditions and the calculated release time. Never borrow one product’s MDAT for another tube.
Calibrate in the right order
Verify every prerequisite
I-CAR notes that requirements vary by manufacturer and even within one manufacturer. Its OEM pre-repair calibration guidance gives concrete examples from 2024 service information: a Mazda CX-5 radar procedure calls for level ground within one degree, an unloaded vehicle and specified tire pressures; a Nissan Altima procedure calls for specified tire pressure, a full fuel tank, correct fluid levels and four-wheel alignment before radar alignment.
These older examples demonstrate the workflow, not a universal specification. Pull the procedure for the vehicle in front of you. Confirm floor and target space, lighting, tires, load, alignment, fuel/fluid state, battery support and dynamic-route conditions as required. If a prerequisite fails, stop and correct or document the referral.
AGRSS says dynamic calibration should begin only after MDAT has been achieved; static calibration follows the adhesive maker’s guidelines. It also calls for proper equipment, trained personnel and the calibration outcome to be provided to the owner.
Create a defensible calibration record
Attach required pre/post scans; the OEM procedure source and access date; calibration type, tool, software and targets; setup/environmental conditions; timestamps, result and trouble codes; technician; any sublet report; and the MDAT notice and release time.
AGRSS 005-2022 says replacement and associated calibration records should be retained for at least three years. AGSC’s recalibration checklist announcement says its checklist covers pre- and post-replacement procedures for static, dynamic and combination systems. A “calibration completed” line without the report is not equivalent evidence.
Release the vehicle deliberately
Use a final hold point
Before release, verify the glass and moldings, sensor mounting, required initialization, scan/calibration result, warning-lamp status, MDAT, customer documents and any OEM road test. If calibration cannot be completed, do not imply the system is ready.
In May 2026, I-CAR summarized Ford and Lincoln ADAS integrity position statements covering scanning/calibration, sensor obstruction, modification and workshop-manual locations. Maintain a procedure-research step as OEM direction develops.
FAQs
Does every windshield replacement require ADAS calibration?
No. Requirements depend on the vehicle and equipped systems. Identify the system and consult current OEM service information for the exact vehicle.
Can calibration start immediately after the glass is set?
Not automatically. AGRSS says dynamic work starts after MDAT and static work follows adhesive-manufacturer guidance. The OEM and adhesive instructions determine the sequence.
Is a successful tool screen enough documentation?
Keep the complete report plus vehicle setup, procedure reference, tool/software details, technician, timestamps and customer outcome. A pass result without context is a weak job record.
